I needed to get just the post slug for a project I have been working on. I found several sites that had similar ways of getting the post slug but I came up with an approach that utilizes WordPress’ get_permalink() and PHP’s basename().

The common approach:

$post_obj = $wp_query->get_queried_object();
$post_ID = $post_obj->ID;
$post_title = $post_obj->post_title;
$post_slug = $post_obj->post_name;

My approach:

$slug = basename(get_permalink());

There have been several times in the past that I can remember designing something and thinking that using a silhouette image would be cool. I often abandon this idea because I can never find what I am looking for and for the price that I want it… FREE.

Tracking 404 pages with Google Analytics is extremely simple. If you have a custom 404 page to handle your 404 pages, you just need to make a simple change in your GA tracking code.

Change this line of code:

pageTracker._trackPageview();

To this:

pageTracker._trackPageview("/404.html?page=" + document.location.pathname + document.location.search + "&from=" + document.referrer);

So the final GA tracking code for your 404 page should look like this:

That’s all there is to it. However, for my purposes I am wanting to use this Analytics code with WordPress. I usually just insert my Analytics code before the closing </body> in my theme’s footer.php file. Since this technique for tracking 404s requires slightly different code than the standard GA tracking code, you can use PHP and the WordPress is_404() function to display the correct code. Just paste this code into your theme’s footer.php file:

Please remember to use your Analytics Account ID and not UA-xxxxxxx-x.

Avatars are widely supported by blog platforms, web forums, and social networking sites. Simply put, an avatar is a virtual representation of someone, such as a picture. For instance, my avatar is a small image of my face. Very creative, I know.

Once you have an image you would like to use for an avatar, you can create a free gravatar.com account and soon after you’ll start seeing it on gravatar enabled sites.

Question: I have a list of #s in column A (lets say 1-20). There is a master list in another column that may not include some of the column A #s. I want a formula in column B to say (if A1 exists in the master list, then “Yes”, “No”). Is this possible?

Answer: This can be done with a formula that utilizes a combination of the VLookup function, IF function, and ISNA function.

Based on the spreadsheet above:

=IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(A2,$D$2:$D$185,1,FALSE)),”No”,”Yes”) would return “No”
=IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(A5,$D$2:$D$185,1,FALSE)),”No”,”Yes”) would return “Yes”

First, you need to enter a FALSE in the last parameter of the VLookup function. This will ensure that the VLookup will test for an exact match.

If the VLookup function does not find an exact match, it will return the #N/A error. By using the IF and ISNA functions, you can return a “Yes” value if an exact match is found. Otherwise, a “No” value is returned.

Just include this PHP code at the top of your include file.

Problem

Windows ignores text inside of PHP files because it doesn’t recognize them. This makes it very difficult to search for specific words or phrases inside of PHP files.

Solution

1. Perform a search on the Start Menu for “indexing”. In the results, click on “Indexing Options”.
2. With “Indexing Options” open, click on the “Advanced” button.
3. Click on the “File Types” tab and scroll down the list until you see php in the Extension column.
4. Click on php to select it, then select the radio button below that reads “Index Properties and File Contents”.
5. Click OK. Click Close.
6. Restart your computer.

Now when you perform a search for a word, you will be able to click “Search in File Contents” and it will search all the text inside of the PHP files and return results for your query. That’s all there is to it.
